The National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) has named Newark Charter School as a NASET Exceptional Charter School in Special Education for the 2017 school year. In recognizing the school, NASET Executive Directors Dr. Roger Pierangel and Dr. George Giuliani stated, “Newark Charter School can take great pride in achieving the highest honor a charter school can achieve through our professional association.” The recognition is bestowed on charter schools that meet rigorous professional criteria and have demonstrated truly exceptional dedication, commitment and achievement in the field of special education.  Newark Charter School has almost 200 students who receive special education services. The students’ needs range from mild learning disabilities and physical impairments to more complex disabilities, such as Autism and Down Syndrome. They are served by a highly effective staff of more than 15 special education teachers, two educational diagnosticians, psychologist, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, instructional interventionists and several paraprofessionals who assist students in the regular education classrooms, in smaller pull-out groups and in one-on-one situations.
