Patriot Profiles - Melissa Lewis

Meet Melissa Lewis…class president of the Class of 2018!

Melissa always exuded Patriot Pride…she was an active member of Student Council, hosted the pep rallies, and her favorite time of year was Spirit Week. The Jr/Sr High School staff fondly remembers Melissa’s Motivational Mondays when she would visit classrooms and offices with handwritten notes of kindness.

One of Melissa’s favorite memories is the Patriot Walk. “A beautiful tradition that embodies the spirit of community and a great way to send off the senior class,” she recalls.

Melissa credits Newark Charter School with facilitating her journey into the world of education. “I am now pursuing a Ph.D. in Education at Stanford University (California) in the Developmental and Psychological Sciences program. Newark Charter is where I fell in love with Spanish thanks to Senora Dunbar and that passion has led me to do research in the field of Bilingual Special Education specifically focusing on Spanish-English Bilinguals. I love the amazing teachers who have and continue to support me in my education ventures to this day!”

Melissa joined Newark Charter School as a second grader in 2007 when the Primary School opened and has a sister who is currently an 8th grader at NCS. Melissa says she is “looking forward to seeing the first alumni reunion in a couple years. What a way to celebrate how far Newark Charter has come!”
