Patriot Profiles - Melissa Thomas

“For the last 20 years I have been a fifth grade science teacher and I have enjoyed every moment!” Known by some former students as Miss O’Shaughnessy, Melissa Thomas has taught science to fifth grade students since Newark Charter School opened in 2001. Melissa also plays the role as a parent to three children who have also attended NCS.

Melissa shares, “Newark Charter School has helped me become the best teacher possible. The school has always given me the freedom to try different things in my classroom which in turn, has allowed me to give my students the best science education possible. My number one goal is to instill a love of learning science in my students and this would not be possible with out the support of the school. I would not be the science teacher I am today without Newark Charter School.”

When asked what she is most looking forward to in Newark Charter School’s future, Melissa emphatically responded, “I’m excited to see all that the kids will accomplish over these next 20 years and beyond. I still can’t believe how much we have grown since 2001 (when NCS opened) and I think it is wonderful that now we have the opportunity to teach more kids now than ever.”

Mrs. Thomas used the words inspirational, supportive and revolutionary to describe Newark Charter School. We think those same three adjectives best describe Melissa Thomas, too!
